Acute bacterial meningitis is inflammation
of meninges caused by bacteria,
developing within hours to days. It is a
medical emergency condition characterized by headache, fever, neck stiffness and
alteration of mental status. Only 44 percent
of cases were characterized by the classic
triad of fever, neck stiffness, and impaired
mental status.
